Forras Missions

Metro Manila, Philippines                                                                     SEPTEMBER 2004

We just want to share what has been happening in Manila. Here are the highlights:

Review Of Why We Are Here

Our home church of Eastside Foursquare in Bothell has partnered with the Foursquare churches of Metro Manila to help plant churches in the poorest parts of Manila (AKA a squatter community). The purpose is not to just start a church but to help transform a community. This could be through education (pre-school), medical services, providing clean water, or many other projects.

The project started by Dr. Felipe Ferrez (President of the Foursquare Church in the Philippines) requested help in planting churches in Metro Manila. Our pastor, Jim Hayford, has been coming to the Philippines since 1984 teaching and coaching pastors. He was contemplating getting his doctorate and decided to make this project his thesis. The results so far have been 65 new churches and 21 preschools started in the last two years.

UCPP Updates

One of Pete’s primary jobs is to help make this project financially self-sustaining. That includes small business loans for our pastors to help them earn a living. We released our first loans the past two months and now have eleven completed loans. Our first two loans were for Pastor Fred Valenzuela and Pastor Josie Sangalang. Pastor Fred is a car salesman as well as a pastor. With the loan, he now has his own capital to buy and sell his own vehicles. Pastor Josie Sangalang is also a pastor. With the loan, she can buy a pig which her husband Pastor Rey picks up in his tricycle, butcher it, and resells packaged meat to their community.

Pete has also been meeting with other non-profit groups to help fill other needs in the communities. Under employment in the Philippines and a shortage of capital for small businesses is a huge problem. One of these groups called CCT (Center for Community Transformation) lend small amounts of money to people living in the poorer areas of Manila. We have started a pilot project with them and invited them to our communities. Our pastors take them around their community and hold introduction meetings explaining how CCT works. Even though it has only been four weeks, we are hearing and seeing great things. We are really trying to get our pastors to pastor a community and not just their own little church.

Another problem is lack of affordable medicines. There is another non-profit group that supplies generic medicines and training. By partnering with them we can get volunteers trained and start a little pharmacy in the church. We hope to pilot this in three areas in the next month before expanding.

Tina has also been working at the UCPP office once a week to help set up, clean up, and get the computers ready to be used by the preschools. The computers were donated by the school district in Kirkland with the help of Patricia Shirley. Tina also updates the UCPP website. Check out the website at http://www.ucpp.org for more information on the project. She is also involved with the twenty-one preschool teachers in their monthly fellowship meetings and prayer group.

Cameron and Carina In School

After much prayer and thought, we have Cameron and Carina attending a school called Faith Academy. Faith Academy is an international Christian school primarily for the children of missionaries working in Asia. All faculty and staff are unpaid and are missionaries. Check out their website at http://www.faith.edu.ph. Tina has done a tremendous job home schooling the kids the last year but the only new friends they had made were from the visiting teams this summer. We had heard of the school but had been told it was 1-2 hours away. When returning from a conference in September we found out the school was only 25 minutes from where we live. We checked out the campus, had the kids take a placement exam and within a week they were in class. They love it! They have made so many friends! Now we can honestly say we feel settled into our new city. This was the final piece in the puzzle of our transition. Tina also volunteers twice a week at Faith Academy in the school library and nurse’s office.

Home For Christmas

We will be home in Seattle for Christmas! We arrive December 19 and are staying for three weeks. We hope to see you all soon!

Prayers Answered

Thanks for all your prayers last month.
  • Not only did Cameron and Carina make a friend but they also were blessed to find a school and made more friends.
  • Pastor Jim Hayford’s trip to Manila this October was very safe and fruitful. We were greatly encouraged as a family.

  • Prayer Requests

Here are this month’s prayer requests:
  • Baby Hyla Gonzalez who is now five months old and was born with her heart outside of her chest - she is the daughter of one of our church planters, Pastor Jhun and Salve Gonzalez. Pray that the right doctors have the wisdom to handle this complicated surgery. The current doctors have kept postponing her surgery. We believe it is because they really don’t know what to do.
  • For our 65 new churches and 21 preschools - that they will grow and make a difference in their community.
  • For all the businesses started by our pastors – that it would allow them to provide for their families.
